Ultraviolet Dust Grain Properties in Starburst Galaxies: Evidence from Radiative Transfer Modeling and Local Group Extinction Curves
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper summarizes the evidence of the ultraviolet properties of dust grains found in starburst galaxies. Observations of starburst galaxies clearly show that the 2175 Å feature is weak or absent. This can be the result of radiative transfer effects (mixing the dust and stars) or due to dust grains which do not have this feature. Spherical DIRTY radiative transfer models imply that it is not radiative transfer effects, but other radiative transfer models with disk/bulge geometries have found cases where it could be radiative transfer effects. Recent work on the extinction curves in the Magellanic Clouds and Milky Way has revealed that the traditional explanation of low metallicity for the absence of the 2175 Å feature in the Small Magellanic Cloud is likely incorrect. The SMC has one sightline with a 2175 Å feature and the Milky Way has sightlines without this feature. In addition, where the 2175 Å feature is found to be weak or absent in both Magellanic Clouds and the Milky Way, there is evidence for recent star formation. Taking the sum of the radiative transfer modeling of starburst galaxies and the behavior of Local Group extinction curves, it is likely that the dust grains in starburst galaxies intrinsically lack the 2175 Å feature.

متن کاملQuantifying dust and the ultraviolet radiation-density in the local universe
A sample of local galaxies for which far infrared and uv fluxes are available is used to estimate the characteristic dust extinction in galaxies and to test whether standard dust properties are plausible. Assuming galaxies can be characterized by a single dust optical depth (certainly not valid for galaxies with a dominant starburst component), the infrared excess and ultraviolet colours of loc...
متن کاملThe Flux Ratio Method for Determining the Dust Attenuation of Starburst Galaxies
The presence of dust in starburst galaxies complicates the study of their stellar populations as the dust’s effects are similar to those associated with changes in the galaxies’ stellar age and metallicity. This degeneracy can be overcome for starburst galaxies if UV/optical/near-infrared observations are combined with far-infrared observations. We present the calibration of the flux ratio meth...
متن کاملA Simple Model for the Absorption of Starlight by Dust in Galaxies
We present a new model to compute the effects of dust on the integrated spectral properties of galaxies, based on an idealized prescription of the main features of the interstellar medium (ISM). The model includes the ionization of Hii regions in the interiors of the dense clouds in which stars form and the influence of the finite lifetime of these clouds on the absorption of radiation. We comp...
متن کاملStarburst-like Dust Extinction in the Small Magellanic Cloud
The recent discovery that the UV dust extinction in starburst galaxies is similar to that found in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) motivated us to re-investigate the ultraviolet (UV) extinction found in the SMC. We have been able to improve significantly on previous studies by carefully choosing pairs of well matched reddened and unreddened stars. In addition, we benefited from the improved S/...
